Generation Groove has four bands, offering a clear and supportive pathway for musicians of all ages and abilities — from complete beginners to experienced performers.
Whether you’re developing your playing, returning to music or looking for a new musical challenge, we'll help you find the right band for you.
Generation Groove performing at Pearson Park
Junior Groovers – children aged 7+
Junior Groovers is our free after-school band for children aged 7 and over in Haxby and surrounding communities.
Children can learn an instrument and experience playing together as a band from the beginning. We provide instruments, tuition and weekly rehearsals completely free, so cost is never a barrier to taking part.
Academy Band – beginners
Academy Band supports players who are developing their confidence and experience as playing as part of a group.
Rehearsals provide a relaxed and supportive environment in which to develop musical and ensemble skills.
Academy Band is not currently rehearsing, but we welcome enquiries from anyone interested in joining.

New Generation – developing players
New Generation is for players who have moved beyond the beginner stage and are developing their skills.
Here, you’ll start to explore a wider range of music, improve your technique, and gain confidence playing in an ensemble.
Getting in the Groove – intermediate band
This is our intermediate band, for musicians who are ready for more challenge.
We focus on ensemble playing, dynamics and musical expression, with a lively and varied repertoire.
This band performs regularly at community events, concerts and outdoor performances.
Generation Groove – senior band
Our senior band brings together experienced musicians performing to a high standard.
We play a diverse and exciting repertoire, from film music and jazz to classical and contemporary arrangements.
The band performs regularly across York and beyond, representing Generation Groove at concerts, events and special occasions.
A musical journey
Our bands are connected, with players moving between them as their confidence and skills grow.
We support our members on their musical journeys, helping each player find the band that best suits their experience and development.
Rehearsal times
Rehearsals take place weekly at Haxby Memorial Hall:
New Generation – Thursday 5:30 to 6:15 pm
Getting in the Groove – Thursday 6:30 to 7:30 pm
Generation Groove – Thursday 7:45 to 9:45 pm
